Moving Across the New Mexico Line Does Not Clear a Texas SR-22

There is an Anthony, Texas and an Anthony, New Mexico, and they share a main street. Canutillo and Vinton sit minutes from the line. In this part of the state, moving to another state can mean moving a few blocks.

The SR-22 requirement does not care.

The requirement attaches to the record, not the address

If Texas suspended your driving privilege, the filing obligation lives on your Texas driver record. Changing where you sleep does not close a Texas record, and New Mexico's motor vehicle division has no power to clear a Texas requirement.

Until Texas is satisfied, your Texas driving privilege stays suspended — and that suspension is visible to other states.

The certificate has to be written for Texas

This is where people lose months. Buying a policy in your new state and asking that carrier to file with that state's DMV does nothing for your Texas record. The certificate has to be filed with the Texas Department of Public Safety, and it has to be written for Texas.

Check your record before you buy anything

Before spending money, pull your requirements through the DPS License Eligibility page. It will tell you exactly what Texas still wants. That is the only reliable way to avoid paying for a filing you do not need, or missing one you do.

If you no longer own a vehicle

Common in this situation: you moved, you sold the car, and you assume there is nothing to insure. DPS answers that one directly — you are still required to file, and a Texas non-owner policy satisfies it. It is usually the cheapest route back to a valid licence, because there is no vehicle to insure for physical damage.

Coming the other way

If you have moved into El Paso from New Mexico or elsewhere, check your limits rather than assuming they carry over. Texas requires 30/60/25 — higher than the 25/50/25 many states use. A policy written to another state's minimum does not meet the Texas one.
