An SR-22 is not insurance — it is a certificate your carrier files with the state proving you carry at least the minimum liability coverage. In Texas that minimum is 30/60/25, the filing runs two years from your most recent conviction, and only your carrier can file it.
Most of what is written about SR-22 insurance is written to rank in search results, not to be understood. Here is the short version, in the order the questions actually come up.
It is not insurance
An SR-22 is a certificate. Your insurance company sends it to the state to prove you carry at least the liability coverage the law requires. The policy is the insurance; the certificate is the proof.
You cannot send it yourself, and not every company offers the service. The Department of Public Safety says so on its own page, which means the company you have today may simply not be able to help you — and calling them tells you nothing about the wider market.
Your insurance card is not a substitute
Neither is your declarations page. The certificate is a separate filing transmitted to the department under the Safety Responsibility Act.
Two years, from your conviction
Texas asks for two years from the date of your most recent conviction, not three, and not two years from when you file. Filing late does not extend it; a new qualifying conviction does.
30/60/25
Texas requires $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 in total per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. That is higher than the 25/50/25 many states use, so a policy carried in from elsewhere may not meet it.
No car, still a filing
If you do not own a vehicle you are still required to file, and a non-owner policy satisfies it. It covers your liability when you drive a car that is not yours, and it does not cover damage to that car or to any vehicle titled to you.
Texas checks by database, not by letter
TexasSure is the state's verification system. Police, registration offices and — since House Bill 1693 — justice and municipal courts query it directly. There is no warning letter in the post. One practical tip from TexasSure itself: check that the VIN on your policy matches your vehicle and registration, because a mistyped VIN makes an insured car read as uninsured.

What we would tell you on the phone
If you were insured on the date of the citation, you may not owe a filing at all — your carrier can send DPS a letter confirming it. If your two years are nearly up, we will tell you that rather than selling you another term. And if you have been declined twice, ask us about TAIPA before you conclude you cannot get covered.
