Most SR-22 pages online say three years. That is roughly true in a lot of states and it is not true in Texas, where the answer is both shorter and measured from a different starting point.

Two years, from the conviction

The Department of Public Safety requires the certificate to be maintained for two years from the date of your most recent conviction, or the date a judgment was rendered against you.

The clock does not restart when you file

This is the detail worth money to you. The two years are measured from the conviction, not from the day the certificate reaches the department.

An SR-22 must be maintained for a total of two years from the date of your most recent conviction; therefore, in this scenario you will only need to maintain it for one more year.

That is DPS answering a question about a driver who filed a year late. A year already elapsed since the conviction is a year already served. If you have been putting this off because the first quote frightened you, you may owe less time than you think.
